DCJ Closes Gender Equality Engagement
Hon. Justice Batema addressing participants at the training on gender inequality and community responsive policies in sentencing

KAMPALA: The Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Alfonse C. Owiny Dollo, on Friday April 5, 2019 closed a two-day training on gender inequality and community responsive policies in sentencing at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala.

The workshop attracted more than 35 participants drawn from JLOS institutions,Civil Society, Academia and different Government Ministries.

The DCJ said the training was timely adding that the participants were now more equipped to handle the challenges associated with sentencing.

He commended the organizers, Judicial Training Institute and the University of Birmingham Law School for creating a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas on the structural level of sentencing, gender stereotypes and socio-cultural norms that prevent women and girls from attaining appropriate sentencing outcomes may be recognized and mitigated in the proposed Sentencing policy. 

"Community participation in the Justice system particularly in Africa is actually not a concept."

Mentioning that it is against that background that our sentencing guidelines provide for the participation of the victims and the community.

The Judicial Training Institute (JTI) and Dr. Maureen Mapp of the University of Birmingham Law School are hosting a two-day knowledge exchange workshop on gender inequality and community responsive policies in sentencing at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala.

The Registrar Research and Training, HW Isaac Muwaata, speaking on behalf of the Executive Director of JTI, applauded Dr. Maureen Owor Mapp of Birmingham University for working tirelessly with criminal justice actors in the country to identify the gaps and needs of equitable justice.

The training was facilitated by; Hon. Lady Justice Prof Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, Hon. Justice David Batema, HW Jackline Kagoya,Superintendent of Police, Ms Marion Kutusa, Commissioner, Directorate of Community service, Mr Paul Kintu among others.
